Former police minister quits ANC over Nkandla scandal

By Celani Sikhakhane

Nathi Nhleko, the former minister of police accused of defending the R240-million Nkandla scandal, has resigned as a member of the ANC.

Nhleko was the police minister when security upgrades were done at former president Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead.

His role in shielding Zuma from public scrutiny was recently revealed by ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula who said Nhleko lied to the nation – and that the famous R3.9-million swimming pool on the property was a fire pool.

Mbalula said: “We went to Parliament and opened an ad hoc committee and said a swimming pool is a fire pool. The [then] police minister [Nathi Nhleko] was sweating, seeing that this was a lie, because it is difficult to explain lies. People have lost their careers because of that thing.”

In a seven-page resignation letter sent on Monday, Nhleko said he had no choice but to leave the ANC and wrote that Mbalula’s attack reflected the “bankruptcy” and “lunacy” of the ANC secretary-general.

Nhleko is the latest in a number of disgruntled ANC members in KZN who have left, mostly to join Zuma’s uMkhonto Wesizwe party.
