Former Pirates coach Riveiro dumped by Al Ahly

  • Jose Riveiro joined Al Ahly in June 2025 but lasted only a few months after a poor run of results in the Egyptian Premier League.
  • His last match was a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids, leaving the giants with just one win in four games this season.

Jose Riveiroโ€™s time in Egypt is over. The Spanish coach was sacked by Al Ahly on Sunday after a poor start to the season left the Egyptian giants sitting 12th on the log.

Riveiroโ€™s dismissal came just a day after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC in the Egyptian Premier League.

He joined Al Ahly in June 2025 after leaving Orlando Pirates, where he enjoyed huge success. During his time in South Africa, he won three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups.

But his spell in Cairo quickly turned sour. His first big test was the Fifa Club World Cup in the United States, where Al Ahly crashed out in the group stages without winning a single game.

This season has been just as poor. The Red Devils managed only one win, two draws and a defeat from their first four league games. The run proved too much for the board, who announced on social media that Riveiro had left โ€œby mutual consentโ€.

His final match was the 2-0 loss to Pyramids, the reigning CAF Champions League winners who beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the final just two months ago.
