Divisions have appeared among Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) women after it was suggested that former City of Johannesburg speaker Colleen Makhubele join MK and lead its women’s structure.
Makhubele is the leader of the South African Rainbow Alliance (Sara).
The suggestion gained traction after Makhubele was seen addressing a media briefing with former president Jacob Zuma about alleged election rigging.
MK members Pearl Motsepe and Queen Nandi Zulu voiced their support for Makhubele in the SA Political Debate WhatsApp group, which has 128 members.
They argued that Makhubele’s leadership would boost the group’s visibility and effectiveness.
However, MK members like Phapano Phasha strongly opposed this view and criticised Makhubele’s potential involvement.
“You need to be reminded that Colleen Makhubele is a founder of a political party called Sara that is funded by the Jews to champion an anti-Palestinian agenda,” Phasha wrote.
“She is the biggest enemy of Jacob Zuma as she also supported his removal from office while she was still a Congress of the People member.
“Even her political party has the signs of that of Helen Suzman, which means she is not part of our agenda,” Phasha wrote.
Makhubele has recently been the face of smaller political parties challenging the Independent Electoral Commission.
Attempts to reach Makhubele for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
