Quincy Promes, a former player for the Dutch national football team and clubs like Ajax and Sevilla, has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in drug trafficking.
The sentence was handed down in absentia by the Amsterdam District Court which found Promes guilty of participating in the import and export of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine in 2020.
Currently playing in the Russian Premier League for Spartak Moscow, Promes did not attend the trial and is not expected to return to the Netherlands soon.
The court’s decision came after prosecutors recommended a nine-year sentence for Promes’s role in smuggling 1,360kg of cocaine from Brazil to the Netherlands through the port of Antwerp in Belgium.
Evidence from phone records showed his direct involvement in managing the drug shipments.
The court criticised Promes for seeking to increase his wealth and potentially his status through drug trafficking despite his successful football career and large social media following.
Promes’s legal team will appeal the ruling, claiming he is innocent.
This is not Promes’s first legal issue, he was previously sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison for a 2020 assault case where he was accused of stabbing his cousin. An appeal has also been filed against this sentence.
His legal troubles impacted his football career as he was removed from the Dutch national team after the trafficking charges were brought against him in 2021.
