Five crew members on board a coast guard plane were killed when it was hit by a passenger jet at Haneda Airport in Japan on Tuesday.
All 379 people on board the Japan Airlines jet were forced to evacuate as the aircraft was engulfed in flames.
JAL flight 516, an Airbus A350, flew into the grounded coast guard plane as it touched down on the runway, immediately bursting into flames.
Dramatic footage shows the moment that the planes collided, and then afterwards as firefighters battled to put out the burning planes.
As of Tuesday evening, emergency services continue to fight the fire.
Five of the coast guard’s six passengers were killed in the crash, with only its captain managing to escape the plane alive.
The small aircraft was waiting to deliver aid to the earthquake-hit Noto peninsula.
All the people on board the larger aircraft survived the crash, but the Tokyo fire department reported that at least 17 were injured, including some passengers with burns to the throat.
Videos taken by passengers within the plane have gone viral on social media, as flames could be seen by the terrified passengers through its windows.
“I felt a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed,” a passenger on the Japan Airlines flight told the Kyodo News Agency. “I saw sparks outside the window and the cabin filled with gas and smoke.”
