Lilian Ngoyi
Known as the “Mother of Black Resistance”. Lilian Ngoyi was a fierce anti-apartheid activist who dedicated her powerful voice to championing women’s rights and the liberation of black women in South Africa.
She was the first woman elected to the ANC Executive Committee and also served as President of the ANC Women’s League. Ngoyi’s leadership was instrumental in forming the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw), and her unwavering commitment led to a historic protest against the inclusion of women in discriminatory pass laws.
Major Mandisa Mfeka
Major Mandisa Mfeka is rewriting history as the first black woman to be a South African combat fighter pilot.
Her unwavering dedication to her role demonstrates her resilience and determination to pave the way for future generations.
Helen Suzman
A relentless advocate for human rights and racial equality, Helen Suzman made history as a founding member of the Progressive Party.
For over a decade in Parliament, she fearlessly opposed apartheid legislation, using her platform to challenge the status quo and expose injustice. Suzman’s tenacity led to 885 speeches and 2,262 questions aimed at dismantling apartheid policies.
Miriam Makeba
Dubbed “Mama Africa” and the “Empress of African Song”, Miriam Makeba used her soul-stirring music as a tool of resistance against apartheid. Her powerful voice transcended borders and languages, inspiring change worldwide.
Makeba’s legacy extended beyond music, as she became a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, advocating for critical causes such as HIV/Aids awareness and supporting abused girls.
Dr Pregaluxmi (Pregs) Govender
Feminist trailblazer Dr Pregs Govender’s impact on women’s rights is huge. As the second South African human rights commissioner and as an MP, she championed gender equality, particularly through initiatives like the Women’s Budget.
Govender’s belief that women’s rights are interconnected and indivisible continues to shape policies and drive change.
