Filling the minds and tummies of the next generation

In the heart of KwaNobuhle, Eastern Cape, JN Tulwana Primary School boasts an unsung hero named Ncumisa Mahayiya.

This Grade 2 teacher’s kindness has won her the praise of the entire community as she fills the tummies and hearts of her young learners.

It touched Mahayiya’s heart that some of her learners arrived at school hungry, so she came up with a plan.

“It was early in the morning, and I hadn’t even started teaching when I found one of my learners crying. I asked him what the problem was and he said he was hungry,” she said.

Mahayiya wrote a letter to the parents, asking for each child to bring a mug to school.

She wanted to give them a cup of tea before the class started so they could have something warm to drink and ease their hunger.

The parents understood and fully supported her idea.

Her thoughtful gesture not only helps the children with hunger but also creates a sense of togetherness among them.

“To have happy learners who love and respect each other we have to make sure that we care for them,” she said.

Mahayiya not only provides tea but also shares her own lunch with the kids.

She encouraged more fortunate students to share their lunch with their friends.

“But only if they want to. It should come from their hearts and not be forced,” she said.

The school has many disadvantaged learners, and Mahayiya hopes for assistance, especially to provide proper school uniforms for those who don’t have them.

Lungekazi Mhlatyaana, a resident, praised Mahayiya’s dedication and hopes that others will support her noble cause.

“This shows that some teachers didn’t just take this profession for the sake of the money but they love the kids,” the resident said.
