Female artists give isiZulu spin to 80s classic

Singer and songwriter Nomfundo Moh has taken South Africa back to the 1980s with her latest R&B single titled “Phakade Lami”.

“Phakade Lami” means “My Forever” in IsiZulu.

It is a love song with a slowed down version of Marvin Gaye’s iconic “Sexual Healing” released in 1982.

The song is accompanied by a flowery music video which was released on 13 October on all streaming platforms.

It features Ami Faku – who currently has a hit with “Abalele” alongside Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa that is reaching impressive numbers on the charts – and Sha Sha who has played a big role in creating the blueprint for the Amapiano music genre in the industry.

The three female artists complement each other in the song which is about a woman who is longing for the arrival of her lover who has been away for a long time.

It is not the first time artists have sampled “Sexual Healing”. Chris Brown’s 2015 hit “Back to Sleep” – one of his most successful numbers of 2015 – also has noticeable similarities and themes.

It was so successful that the following year the artist did three official remixes of the song with eight artists.

Meanwhile Nomfundo Moh who released two successful singles titled “Umthwalo” and “Lilizela” early this year, has reached over 165,000 views on YouTube and is sitting at number 9 on music trends charts, with the music video directed by Slowman.
