· Dyira’s family say he was assaulted before being forced into a Polo by men who drove away with him.
· CATA spokesperson says the case is difficult to investigate as the suspects were not in a taxi but a Polo.
The family of missing Cape Town man Dyira say they are desperate for answers after he was allegedly kidnapped by men driving a Polo.
A relative, who asked not to be named, said friends of Dyira came to the house on Sunday to report what had happened.
“His friends told us that he was assaulted before being forced inside the Polo and they drove off with him,” said the family member.
The family say his grandmother has not been able to sleep since he disappeared. “We are asking anyone who might know what has happened to come forward. His friends are also confused because they were still chatting when the vehicle arrived,” said the relative.
Resident Noni Masangwana said she felt sorry for the family. She said Dyira’s disappearance reminded her of her nephew, who was the same age when he was kidnapped by men in a Toyota Quantum.
“Later we were told that they were taxi drivers. He was found shot and murdered. I am not trying to scare the family, but taxi drivers have no mercy,” said Masangwana.
She added that many families do not open cases because it is difficult to identify the taxi drivers involved. “We didn’t open a case because we didn’t know who to open it against. There are too many taxi drivers. But we will keep Dyira’s family in our prayers and pray for his safe return.”
Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi said the case is unusual because the suspects were driving a Polo.
“We are dealing with Quantums, they are easy to identify and investigate. This case is different unless there was a witness who saw the driver. That said, we will keep our ears to the ground,” said Sityebi.
