The family of taxi driver Luvuyo Vimba is demanding answers after videos showed him fighting with police before his death on 1 November in Cape Town.
“We want answers, but we don’t know what happened. We saw videos on social media. We want answers from everyone involved in this,” said family member Elvis Mzolisa.
The family went to the police station after hearing Vimba had been arrested.
“On Friday, the same day the incident happened, we went to the police station, but we were told that we could not see him because he fought with SAPS. We respected that and decided to go and see him on Saturday, but we couldn’t find him,” said Mzolisa.
They eventually found him at the mortuary.
His brother, Malusi, said Vimba was a good person who supported two young children.
“When we heard that he was fighting with SAPS, we were shocked because he’s not that type of person. He was a people person, a breadwinner, and someone who liked jokes. He didn’t deserve to die like that,” said Malusi.
“The youngest is seven years old, and their father was taken away from them in a very brutal way. Maybe we can find peace after hearing the reason for him to be assaulted like that.”
The taxi group CODETA has stated they won’t stop until they get justice for their driver.
Police watchdog Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed they are investigating.
“There will be a reconstruction of the scene because the deceased died days after the incident in hospital,” said Shuping.
