The eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has sent a river of boiling lava towards the city of Goma.
Thousands of residents fled, after seeing flames coming out of the mountain.
But on Sunday morning, the military governor of the region was quoted on Al Jazeera saying the lava had stopped just outside the city.
Initial estimates are that five people have died.
The volcano last erupted in January 2002, killing 250 people, and covering parts of Goma in lava.
On 10 May, a local observatory for the volcano warned that it needed careful monitoring.
