  • John Barclay says the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks have strong squads with many Springboks, and he believes these South African teams can push deep into the Champions Cup.
  • Lawrence Dallaglio and Chris Robshaw warn that French and English sides stay powerful, but they say Bayonne, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Munster, Saints and Saracens will test all teams.

The Stormers head into the Champions Cup with big expectations from former rugby captains who believe South African sides can shake up Europe.

John Barclay says the teams with the most depth will rise, and he points straight at the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks.

He says the Stormers have many Springboks, and that strength can make a real difference in a long and punishing contest.

The Stormers open their run on Friday night against Bayonne at Stade Jean-Dauger.

The Bulls and the Sharks are also in action as the tournament kicks off across Europe.

Barclay says English clubs like Bath or Saracens could meet French giants Toulouse later in the competition.

But he believes South African sides are tough to stop when their full squads are available.

Lawrence Dallaglio says the Champions Cup is a different kind of battle.

He says winning in big European stadiums with long histories tests every part of a player.

He tips Toulouse, Bordeaux, Munster, Saints and Saracens to be strong again this year.

He also says Bayonne have a strong squad.

Chris Robshaw says European matches still feel special.

He remembers hard trips to the south of France and the tough challenge of playing at Leinster.

The Champions Cup starts with South African teams ready to take on the best in Europe.
