The city of eThekwini has approved an extra R284-million to fix Moses Mabhida Stadium after repairs fell behind schedule.
The Executive Committee made this decision in early September when they realised the work would not be done by the end of this month as planned.
The stadium now needs a total of R520-million for repairs. The original budget was R236-million.
The 15-year-old stadium has serious problems with its roof, concrete and steel parts that need urgent fixing.
Workers are repairing damaged roof parts, treating rust on steel, and strengthening the arch structure.
The city says the repairs will now finish sometime in 2027. The current contract ends on 28 September but much work still needs to be done.
Some repairs have already been completed. Workers have replaced the damaged roof covering, put special coatings on steel to stop rust, and fixed drainage systems.
The biggest cost is fixing cables and the canvas roof system at R135.5-million. New LED lights will cost R55.3-million.
The stadium was built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup and brings in millions in revenue from big sports and entertainment events.
The city says the stadium needs constant maintenance to keep it safe for visitors and profitable for business.
