England’s elite crash out as Carabao Cup returns

By Razeen Gutta

Round three of the Carabao Cup saw Premier League giants return to the competition – and the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs crashing out as fast as they got in.

Brentford and Everton were the only top tier sides to get knocked out in Tuesday’s action, but Wednesday was a very different night for England’s elite.

Manchester City against Chelsea at the Etihad was the pick of the ties with both sides making wholesale changes.

It was a pretty even contest in terms of chances created and possession, and following a goalless first half, it was all still in the balance when the second period commenced.

Chelsea will rue their missed opportunities though, because shortly after the break City took the lead through Riyad Mahrez. Moments later, Pep Guardiola’s side put the icing on the cake when Julian Alvarez made it two to put the match beyond doubt.

The Blues made five changes for the final stages of the game, but it was to no avail as the Cityzens booked their spot in round four.

It was a difficult evening for North London, as league leaders Arsenal were defeated 3-1 at home to Brighton while Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Whether the goal and assist from Jesse Lingard came too late to get him on England’s plane to Qatar remains to be seen. Things do not seem to be getting easier for Antonio Conte with Harry Kane making no difference to the outcome on the night.

West Ham and Crystal Palace were beaten as well, with Blackburn and Newcastle both winning on penalties.

Liverpool, who beat Spurs at the weekend, progressed to the next round.

The Reds did not make things easy for themselves, with the game ending 0-0 before going to spot kicks as well.

The current holders of the Carabao Cup will continue their title defence courtesy of three great saves from Caoimhin Kelleher – which gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a 3-2 shootout win.
