Police in the Eastern Cape are on the hunt for suspects in the brutal murder and rape of an 85-year-old woman at her home near Nomzamo Garage on Keiskammahoek’s Main Road.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, said the tragic discovery was made Saturday morning when the victim’s domestic worker returned to find her employer dead in the bedroom.
“It is alleged that the domestic worker left the deceased on Friday, and when she arrived on Saturday at about 08h00, she found her body in her bedroom. She called for help from the neighbors, and they alerted the police. Preliminary investigation was done by police with no success,” Mawisa said.
The case is under investigation for murder, rape, and house robbery.
This disturbing event comes on the heels of another tragedy, as a 56-year-old woman was recently killed by her son in nearby Lower Gxulu.
Local Human Rights Activist Petros Majola condemned the escalating violence in Keiskammahoek: “We condemn these murders in the strongest terms possible, we’re also asking the government to intervene because incidents of violence against women are growing in that small town [Keiskammahoek], the first victim has not even been buried yet and we’re already talking about another murder in the same town,” he said.
