Police have arrested a 66-year-old man for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl at a creche owned by his daughter in Mfuleni, Cape Town.
The child’s mother said her daughter told her about the incident on Thursday last week. The girl said the suspect, who works as the creche’s transport driver, put her on his lap and removed her clothes before raping her.
The child cried from pain during the attack.
“I didn’t know what to do because she told me this at night, and I immediately contacted her dad,” said the mother.
“The suspect picked my daughter up as he was the transport driver for the creche; we had an agreement with the creche that they would pick her up around 5.40am, as it is the same time I have to leave for work.”
The child went to the creche on Friday while the family decided what to do.
On Saturday, a doctor examined her and confirmed the assault.
“We then went to the police station, and the suspect was arrested. I am hurt. Why did that man violate my daughter?” the mother asked.
The case has angered Mfuleni residents, some of whom want the creche to be shut down.
Sindiswa Buqwana, whose child attends the creche, said: “Can you believe that we have never been allowed to go inside the creche? We stand outside the gate when bringing our kids, and then someone will come to pick them up,” Buqwana said.
“We failed our kids; we cannot take them to a place we don’t know. We should’ve asked when we were not allowed to get inside, but we chose to keep quiet. Who knows if other kids are being abused there?”
The community hopes the suspect will remain in jail.
“Everyone is disappointed because the suspect is a well-known old man who is a church member. We never thought he would do this; he must rot in jail,” said Buqwana.
Western Cape police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the man’s arrest and said he will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court.
