With the Ekurhuleni Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga still recovering in hospital after a major accident, it has been revealed that the private car he was travelling in was illegally fitted with blue lights.

His African Transformation Movement (ATM) colleague, PR councillor John Senona and the MMCā€™s bodyguard were also badly injured in the multi-vehicle accident.

Four vehicles were involved in the pileup along the R21 South just before the Pomona off-ramp on Monday night.

It has been established that an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) bodyguard was driving Dunga in his private vehicle.

In a statement released by the regional ANC, council chief whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi said while they are sensitive to the accident, they need clarity on some of the events around the crash.

ā€œWe have established that the MMC was driven by an EMPD protector in a car that does not belong to the metro,” the statement said.

ā€œIs the EMPD protector permitted to drive an MMC in a car that is not registered under the MMCā€™s name? Having noted that the car with registration JM50XYGP belongs to another person?ā€

After the accident, the private car was impounded in municipal storage, which is against metro policies.

Dlabathi added that the car in which the MMC was travelling was fitted with blue lights.

ā€œThis too is against metro policies,ā€ he added.

SAPS is investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
