Egypt managed to make it to the last 16 by drawing 2-2 with Cape Verde at the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Egypt needed to match the result of rivals Ghana, who were taking on Mozambique and looked to be through with a 2-0 lead going into added time.
However, Mozambique managed to score twice to push Egypt through and Ghana were left wondering how they collapsed in the closing stages.
Ghana will now have to wait and see if they can qualify as one of the best third-placed teams when the group stages come to an end later this week.
Egypt were trailing Cape Verde at halftime but came back strong in the second half.
Substitute Trezeguet scored for Egypt, making it 1-1. Then, in extra time, Mostafa Mohamed scored, putting Egypt ahead. However, Cape Verde quickly equalised with a goal from Bryan Teixeira.
Egypt finished second in their group and moved on to the next round. They’ll play against the second-place team from Group F this Sunday.
Egypt’s star player Mohamed Salah, who couldn’t play due to injury and watched the game from the stands, is going back to Liverpool for treatment. It’s still unclear if he’ll be able to play if Egypt reaches the final.
Egypt, who have won the Africa Cup of Nations seven times, barely made it through this round. They hope to win their first title since 2010, possibly with Salah returning to help.
