The Netherlands defeated Romania 3-0 on Tuesday to progress to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen were the stars of the show as the Dutch put on a dominant display at the Allianz Arena.
Romania looked positive in the opening exchanges, but Gakpo opened the scoring with a fine strike at the near post on the 20-minute mark.
The Liverpool man is now the top scorer at this year’s championships and just the third Dutch player to score three or more goals at two different major tournaments, along with Johnny Rep and Dennis Bergkamp.
Gakpo, who was named player of the match, also became the first Dutchman to score and assist in the same Euros knockout game since Frank Rijkaard back in 1992.
His assist came with just seven minutes to play as he set up substitute Malen for the second.
Malen completed his brace in stoppage time to make it 3-0, with the last eight now beckoning for Ronald Koeman’s side.
The Dutch will face either Austria or Turkey in the next round. Should they win that clash, they will take on England or Switzerland for a place in the final.
