- KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka says the learners will be punished and that violence will not be allowed in schools.
KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka is very angry after a group of schoolgirls were caught fighting at a Durban school.
The fight happened at Lakehaven Secondary School in the uMlazi District. The girls are from different races, black and coloured, and were seen wearing school uniforms while hitting each other.
The fight was filmed and shared on social media. Many people are upset because the fight seems to be about race.
The Department of Education said this kind of violence is wrong and should never happen at schools.
“Schools must be safe places. Children must be able to learn and teachers must be able to work,” said MEC Hlomuka.
He said the department is now investigating the fight. The girls who were involved will be punished.
He also said hurting other learners and making schools unsafe is a serious crime.
The department said it feels sorry for the learners who were hurt in the fight. They said they hope the girls recover soon and get support to help them heal.
