King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has appointed a committee of senior traditional leaders and royal family members to investigate the incident in which ANC provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma grabbed the microphone from the king’s traditional prime minister, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

In a statement, the King said the incident during the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo’s passing was un-African and provocative.

“His Majesty has referred this matter to a committee of traditional leaders and royal family members who will evaluate the incident and all aspects.

“They will engage with relevant stakeholders. They will advise His Majesty on the way forward and make sure that such an incident does not take place in future,” the statement reads.

The members of the committee are Inkosi Sifiso Shinga, Inkosi Nqayizivele Sithole, Inkosi Russel Cebekhulu, Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza, Inkosi Zulu of kwaNgenetsheni, Inkosi Xulu of Nkandla, Prince Vanana Zulu of KwaMinyamanzi, Prince Zeblon Zulu of KwaMandlakazi and Prince Vusi Zulu of eMahhashini.

King Misuzulu said that the incident had undermined the Zulu nation and peace in the province.

A day after the incident, Duma told Newzroom Africa that the provincial government doesn’t recognise the position of the king’s traditional prime minister because it did not exist historically and is not in the South African Constitution.

Last Wednesday ANC KZN provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo repeated the view during a media briefing.

The king expressed his disappointment at the provincial government’s position.

He said that the position of traditional prime minister had existed since the reign of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, who appointed Ngomane as his prime minister.

Traditional leaders are also planning to meet the cabinet of the provincial government to discuss their unhappiness over the incident.

They also want to discuss with the ANC leadership the issue of the king’s traditional prime minister which they believe needs urgent attention so that the differences can be ironed out before ANC KZN leaders make a planned visit to King Misuzulu to apologise.
