- Codeta says the taxi driver was likely drunk and could have seriously hurt the officer in the incident.
- The driver was arrested for attempted murder, drunk driving, and ignoring a lawful instruction on Wetton Road.
The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) says it will take action against a Cape Town taxi driver who allegedly drove drunk with a traffic officer hanging onto the front of the taxi.
The 50-year-old driver was arrested on Wetton Road on Monday after refusing to stop when ordered by the officer.
Codeta spokesperson Makhosandile Tumana said they were shocked by the video of the incident, which has since gone viral.
“We saw the driver’s behaviour, and we don’t know why he did that, but we heard he was under the influence of alcohol. What he did was wrong, and he could have injured the officer,” said Tumana.
Tumana said the association will meet with the vehicle’s owner and the route representative to discuss the next steps once the driver is released.
City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout confirmed the driver was arrested soon after the incident. “He drove off with the officer still in front of the taxi,” she said.
Additional traffic units stopped him further down Wetton Road. He was arrested for attempted murder, drunk driving, and ignoring a lawful instruction.
