  • Motorists use the MyTank app to compare real-time prices at nearby fuel stations and find the best rewards programmes.
  • Station owners and drivers share local fuel prices on the app to help people save money during the price hike.

Diesel prices are not fixed at the pump in South Africa. This means every fuel station can choose its own price based on its profit margins. Petrol prices are different because the government sets a fixed retail price for every station.

Because diesel prices are unregulated, it is often hard for drivers to know which station is the cheapest. Many diesel vehicle owners have started sharing tips in community groups to help each other find lower prices.

Apps like MyTank have become more popular for this reason. The app was launched in 2022 by Rob Gardner to help drivers find the best value for money. It allows both fuel station owners and drivers to share real-time prices for petrol and diesel, MyBroadband reported.

The app helps motorists decide if it is worth driving further to save on fuel. It also shows rewards programmes and cash-back incentives. This helps users see exactly how much they can save or earn back when they fill up.

Recent data shows that wholesale diesel prices are expected to rise. This is because global tensions are affecting the supply of oil. Some stations have already started to increase their prices before the official changes.

There are thousands of fuel stations listed on the app from all major brands. This helps station owners compete for customers by showing their latest prices and facilities. The app is free for drivers to use on Android and web browsers.
