- Popular local sneaker brand Drip returns under a new name after going bankrupt over R20-million advertising debt.
- Company founder starts fresh with Drip Sportif despite losing stores and facing investigations.
The founder of Drip Footwear, which went bankrupt last year, has brought the popular sneaker brand back to life under a new name.
Lekau Sehoana launched Drip Sportif and its new Drip Likwidz 23 Sneaker at the TAPE store in Mall of Africa, Midrand, on Wednesday.
The original Drip Footwear closed all 14 of its stores in October 2024 after a court declared it bankrupt. This came after advertising company Wideopen Platform took Drip to court over an unpaid R20 million bill.
The closure meant all workers lost their jobs. The company also lost its office at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town after failing to pay rent.
The Drip Group faced more trouble when it was investigated for breaking foreign exchange rules. The company risked losing R3.6 million to the state.
But Sehoana is not giving up. He is now trying to rebuild the brand’s success in South African fashion under its new name, Drip Sportif.
