DOPple blow

President Cyril Ramaphosa has locked down alcohol once again – and ordered a night time curfew.

He announced the new Covid-19 rules on Sunday “as we head towards the peak of infections”.

  • The alcohol ban is aimed at keeping hospitals free of drink-related injuries. The curfew is from 9pm to 4am.
  • The new rules include mandatory mask wearing in public. Countries that have taken masks seriously have generally been more successful in fighting the virus.

South Africa now has one of the highest rates of increase in infections in the world. There have been almost 4,000 deaths in SA, and over 264,000 cases recorded.

Ramaphosa said there were about 500 new infections an hour at the moment.
