The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (Codeta) has denied that taxis have stopped running because of the floods.
The province has been battered by heavy rains and storms, causing major damage and displacing residents, especially those in flood-prone areas.
Makhosandile Tumana, the public relations officer for Codeta, said, “The statement that we will not be operating this afternoon is false” and apologised to commuters “for any inconvenience caused.”
“I didn’t know the Codeta page was fake,” said Sindiswa Nala.
“I believed it. I took a screenshot and sent it to my boss. When I arrived at work, I reminded them that I would be leaving early to avoid struggling to get home later,” she said.
After learning the news was fake, another commuter still decided not to take a taxi.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry. The person running the fake Codeta Facebook page saw the floods and decided to lie, but the truth is that driving is difficult with flooded roads,” he said, asking not to be named.
