Matthew Breetzke and Junior Dala were the stars as the table topping Durban Super Giants roared to SA20 victory over the Pretoria Capitals.
After losing the reverse fixture in Centurion while chasing, Durban opted to bat first at Kingsmead.
Breetzke batted through the first half of the innings, smashing 73 off 46 balls with ten fours and three sixes.
Heinrich Klaasen got a quick-fire 30 as well, while JJ Smuts (21) ensured the hosts could get to 174/9 in their 20 overs.
In response, Pretoria got off to a good start thanks to a composed 41 off 26 balls by Will Jacks.
Phillip Salt was dismissed early by Wiaan Mulder, though, and Dala picked up 5/26 in his four overs to ensure wickets would fall at regular intervals.
It would go down to the wire; and despite a late 19 off seven balls for Adil Rashid in the final wicket partnership, the Capitals would miss out on a successful run chase by eight runs.
With first place now all but secured for Durban, the Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape look set on the second and third spots on the table.
For the final qualifying place, Pretoria are still quietly confident of claiming it.
The Joburg Super Kings — and MI Cape Town, who Joburg beat by 10-wickets on Monday — are the other sides still eying up playoff qualification.
On Wednesday, Joburg host Eastern Cape at the Bull Ring before the Capitals face Cape Town in Centurion on Thursday.
