Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 in the Australian Open men’s singles final to go level with Rafael Nadal’s all-time record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
The first set went the way of the 35-year-old as the Serb put Tsitsipas away 6-3. At one set to nil though, it did not look as if it would be a straight-set win once the second had got underway.
The world number three from Greece took set number three as far as possible, making the all-time great work hard for his 10th title in Melbourne.
The final two sets ended up going Djokovic’s way, sealing them both 7-6 to get the party started; and according to his opponent, cement his place as the greatest player of all time.
“He’s the greatest who ever held a tennis racket,” Tsitsipas told reporters in praise of the champion post-match.
“I don’t know what to say but it speaks for itself. It’s all in the numbers. You make me a better player when I am on the court. I’ve had the privilege to play a lot of high-intensity games but these are the matches I have been working my entire life for.”
Speaking after the win, Djokovic called this his greatest victory ever, as he touched on overcoming an injury but also took time out to praise 24-year-old Tsitsipas.
“I have to say I am touched by Stefanos’ words. Thanks for being so kind and respectful. I congratulate you on an amazing tournament. This is definitely not your last grand slam. You have lots of time, more than me. I still think you are very interesting. We are small countries that don’t have a tennis tradition,” he said.
“This has been one of the most difficult tournaments, considering the circumstances. Not playing last year and coming back this year. I want to thank all the people who made me feel comfortable. There is a reason I have been playing my best tennis here.”
“Only the team and the family know what we have been through. I would say this is the biggest victory in my life, considering the circumstances.”
