DJ Sumbody was killed after angering dangerous drug lords

  • DJ Sumbody was packing to leave Johannesburg when he was shot dead in a hit linked to a missing drug shipment.
  • Police arrested four men, including a rich businessman, for the killing. A feared gang called “The Big Five” is said to be behind it.

DJ Sumbody was killed in a hit after getting mixed up in a drug war between deadly underworld gangs.

The popular producer and club owner, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, was gunned down with an AK-47 in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022. His two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were also killed.

Police arrested four suspects, including businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe. Sources say the murder was ordered by a feared gang known as “The Big Five”.

It all started when a huge drug shipment went missing from police custody in KwaZulu-Natal. The drugs later popped up in Joburg’s club scene, selling for cheap. That made the real owners furious, Sunday World reported.

DJ Sumbody, who was opening a new branch of his Ayepyep club in Cape Town, helped set up a meeting between the dealers and a Cape Town businessman. But that businessman snitched to “The Big Five” to protect himself, and DJ Sumbody ended up on the gang’s hit list.

Even though one gang boss said DJ Sumbody was not a criminal and should not die, the others said he knew too much.

On the day he was killed, DJ Sumbody had packed his bags to move to Cape Town and kept his final gig off social media—something he never did.

There’s more: he was also linked to the taxi industry. He first asked a late taxi boss to help fund his Pretoria nightclub. Later, he worked with billionaire taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni.

His friend, DJ Vettys, once posted photos from Sibanyoni’s party with the words: “Show me your friends and I’ll show you mine.” DJ Vettys was later shot but survived.

Sources say DJ Sumbody agreed to let drugs be sold in his Pretoria club to get funding. But he changed his mind and promised it would happen in Cape Town instead. When that also didn’t happen, the gang allegedly decided he had to die.

The National Prosecuting Authority says it cannot speak about the case while it’s still in court.
