Liz Truss has not had an easy first month as leader of the United Kingdom – but at least she can be comforted by an audience with the new king… can’t she?
Apparently not.
The prime minister had an awkward encounter when she went to see King Charles this week.
Walking into his office in Buckingham Palace, she curtseyed and said “Your Majesty,” to which
Charles responded: “So you’ve come back again? Dear oh dear.”
In her first 18 days in office, Liz Truss announced £45 billion (R930 billion) of tax cuts which sent the markets plunging.
The pound reached its lowest ever point against the US dollar, which was an economic disaster, and she has already announced countless U-turns to her policies.
While this seems an impressive feat in just 18 days, she was effectively powerless for the first 10 days of those while the country mourned the death of the Queen.
She effectively destroyed her own premiership in just over a week. This, as one writer for the Economist has pointed out, means she had roughly the same shelf-life as a lettuce.
