A crash between a truck and a car carrying school children left eight people dead on the N2 in Mandeni, northern KZN, on Friday morning.

Some of the victims were children.

IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick reported that one more person was critically injured. Teams searched for missing children at the crash site.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said: “Our hearts are with the families and relatives of the eight victims of the horrific accident between bridges 17 and 19 on the N2 in Mandeni.”

Early reports indicate that the driver of a seven-seater car lost control and collided head-on with a truck, causing the truck to flip over.

“What saddens us is that the victims of the accident include young people with a bright future,” Duma added.

The N2 is currently closed in both directions between bridges 18 and 19 for emergency teams. Traffic is being redirected to alternative routes.
