Davido’s gangster music video gets killer numbers

It has taken Nigerian afrobeat star Davido only five days to shoot up to the top of South Africa’s Youtube trending list with a powerful cinematic video of his song Jowo.

The video posted three million views worldwide within four days.

Jowo, which means “please” in Yoruba, is off the album A Better Time. It tells of a scandalous love story between a male and a female gang leader in Lagos. Davido plays the male gangster and Nigerian TV celebrity Rebecca Nengi Hampson plays the female.

The two have been set up against each other by a Godfather figure in Nigerian gangland played by the veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo.

Perhaps the highlight of the video is the sexy gangster women dancing in a desert location.

One Twitter user summed up the plot: “They wanted us both dead but we figured and killed them.”

Davido’s rise to superstar status during 2020 was spurred by the album FEM which became the theme song for Nigerian youth protesting police brutality and reached the number one spot in the Apple Music charts.

A Better Time includes performances from Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, and Nas.
