- Marvel announced David Jonsson as the new Black Panther at San Diego Comic Con, alongside director Ryan Coogler and Kevin Feige.
- Jonsson will play T’Challa’s grown son in Black Panther 3, out on 15 December 2028, following Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020.
Marvel has officially announced that British actor David Jonsson will take on the role of Black Panther in Black Panther 3, set for release on 15 December 2028.
The announcement was made at San Diego Comic Con by director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, alongside returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.
Jonsson will play an adult version of Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia. The character was first introduced as a child in the post credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The casting marks a new chapter for the franchise following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Boseman, who played King T’Challa, died from colon cancer at the age of 43, after privately battling the disease for four years.
Instead of recasting the role immediately, Marvel honoured Boseman’s legacy with 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which centred on T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, taking up the Black Panther mantle while the story explored grief and loss.
Coogler said the third film will be a coming of age story, following T’Challa’s son as he grows into his father’s legacy.
Jonsson, 32, has built his career on roles in Industry, Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk, and recently won a BAFTA Rising Star Award and a Film Independent Spirit Award.
Speaking at Comic Con, Jonsson said watching Boseman’s Black Panther in a London cinema in 2018 changed how he saw the character and its cultural impact.
Coogler returns to write and direct the film, with Wright and Duke reprising their roles. Marvel says the film will be shot entirely on large format film, a first for the franchise.
