Police have launched a manhunt to track down prisoner Clatta Gumbo who escaped on Monday morning while visiting a dietician at the Mamelodi Regional Hospital in Tshwane.
Two officers – a man and a woman – were severely assaulted by Gumbo before he escaped.
Gumbo, who is serving a life sentence at the Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre for rape, kidnapping and assault, managed to disarm the male officer, who sustained serious injuries and is recovering at home.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said: “Immediate action has been taken to initiate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
“[We appeal] to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the escapee to contact the nearest [prisons] facility or police station. We encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.”
