- DA KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Dean McPherson held a meeting with the National Freedom Party in Durban that lasted more than two hours.
- The National Freedom Party left the Government of Provincial Unity in KwaZulu-Natal and the party is facing violent fights between leaders.
The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal will invite all political parties in the provincial coalition to a meeting next month to sort out their differences.
DA KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Dean McPherson said his party held a meeting with the National Freedom Party in Durban. Senior members from both parties attended the meeting, which lasted more than two hours.
McPherson said the meeting was friendly and useful.
The National Freedom Party recently pulled out of the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) in KwaZulu-Natal. The party is now facing severe internal problems, including violent physical fights between its leaders and a crisis over President Ivan Barnes’s leadership.
The problems in the National Freedom Party have spread to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature. The party’s decision to withdraw from the coalition government has put the stability of the GPU at risk.
McPherson said the meeting gave the DA insight into the problems the National Freedom Party is experiencing in the coalition.
“As a responsible and committed member of the GPU, the DA will be inviting the IFP, ANC and NFP to a multiparty meeting to allow all parties to raise issues that are important to them as well as resolve outstanding differences,” he said.
He said the DA believes the GPU, with full participation from the National Freedom Party, is the best way to deliver stability, economic growth and jobs to people in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Our view remains that the GPU, with the full participation of the NFP, is the best vehicle to deliver stability, economic growth and jobs to the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” McPherson said.
He said the DA believes the meeting with the National Freedom Party was a positive step. He called on all political parties in the GPU to come together in the best interests of the province.
