Expect tighter restrictions to stop the Covid surge when President Cyril Ramaphosa  addresses the nation at 8pm on Thursday night.

Ramaphosa has held a special Cabinet meeting, which looked at the recommendations made by the national coronavirus command council (NCCC).

With rising infections in the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, there are fears that people travelling home or going on holiday for the festive season will spread the disease.

Ahead of the announcement, there are even unverified rumours about a potential curfew and restrictions on liquor sales circulating on social media.

The KZN government this week banned major festive season events.

SA has the highest number of Covid-19 infections in Africa and is the 16th highest globally.

Meanwhile, News 24 reports that South Africa has missed its first R500m payment to the Covax initiative – a scheme to help middle- and low-income countries get vaccines when they become available.

The Department of Health’s Dr Anban Pillay confirmed the payment was waiting for Treasury approvals before it could be made.
