Crime bites: Police catch extortion gang members

Sbongile Nonyana presents the latest crime news from around South Africa. 

Kwaggafontein – Mpumalanga police shot and killed one suspect and wounded two others who were part of an extortion gang. They are now searching for a fourth suspect. The shootout happened at around 4am on Monday when the suspects fired at the police. The injured suspects are in hospital under police guard. No police officers were hurt during the incident.

Thabamoopo – A 29-year-old Limpopo man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a two-year-old girl. The man, a family friend, was caught by the girl’s mother after her sister saw what had happened and told her. The man ran away but was later arrested. The incident took place in September 2020.

Kimberley – Kevin Steenkamp, 33, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbing a 62-year-old woman in November 2023. The woman was accosted on her way to church. She was threatened with a knife and robbed of her handbag and jewellery.

Sekhukhune – Police are investigating the death of a 34-year-old man who was found with severe head injuries near a tavern toilet on Saturday at around 3am No suspects have been arrested yet.

Hennenman – Police in Hennenman in the Free State have arrested two suspects for theft and kidnapping. The suspects threatened a man with a gun and kidnapped his wife, later leaving her in a graveyard. The suspects are expected to appear in the Rosendal Magistrates’ Court soon.
