Covid: hardest-hit districts

The Department of Health has named the ten hardest-hit districts likely to remain at high lockdown levels.

Ekurhuleni metro in Gauteng, eThekwini metro and iLembe District in KZN, Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros in the Eastern Cape, Cape Town City and the Cape Winelands district in the Western Cape have the highest number of Covid-19 infections, followed by the Garden Route (WC), Chris Hani (EC) district and the City of Johannesburg (GP).

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told News24 that SA is aiming to do what no other country has done – lift lockdown while the rate of infections is still rising.

The premiers of Gauteng, Western Cape and KZN — the hardest-hit provinces — are demanding to move to Level 3, but the National Coronavirus Command Council will make the final decision.
