- Captain Rajab Buggs bought ice lollies for 15 excited kids while patrolling the Bayern Munich section of Tafelsig.
- A video of the officers handing out the treats went viral and won praise from top police commanders.
A routine police search in Mitchells Plain turned into a moment of pure joy for children in Tafelsig.
It was a blistering 32ºC day. Captain Rajab Buggs and his team were busy searching houses for drugs and illegal guns.
The officers stopped at a local shop to buy cold drinks for themselves. That is when Captain Buggs noticed three young children staring longingly at the store.
He realised their parents likely could not afford treats. Without hesitating, he bought them ice lollies.
Word spread fast. Soon, more children came skipping down the street saying, “The police did lekker by me”.
Eventually, around 15 children gathered. A young constable was moved by his captain’s kindness and dug into his own pocket to buy another round of lollies for the group.
A resident filmed the uniformed officers jogging between their vans and the kids to hand out the sweets. The video quickly went viral.
Captain Buggs says this small act helps build trust in an area where children are often taught to fear the police.
‘We want to change that mindset because we want them to see we’re human too and we care for the community,’ Buggs said.
Station commander Brigadier Brian Muller praised his team for acting out of the goodness of their hearts.
‘I am immensely proud of what my officers did for those kids,’ Muller said.
