Constables Nala Bonginkosi and Paile Davies have appeared in the Special Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge on allegations of theft of fuel from an impounded vehicle.

The duo allegedly stole more than 2,000 litres of diesel at the police station .

The constables stopped a bakkie towing a tanker trailer with 2,750 litres of diesel along the R59 road at Albertin on 25 May. The driver was asked to provide proof of purchase and a flammable goods permit.

When the permit could not be produced the trailer was towed to the station. The owner was arrested and released by the court on 27 May.

The case was registered at the same station, and the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation ensued, which resulted in the constables being summoned to appear in court for theft and corruption charges.

At current prices the fuel is worth about R284,000.

The matter was postponed to 16 November to allow for further investigation.
