Police have arrested yet another member of a so-called blue-light gang – criminals who terrorise motorists by posing as cops before hijacking or robbing them.
On Wednesday, officers of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department’s community liaison unit arrested a 29-year-old suspect linked to a blue-light gang in the Tembisa area.
Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato said the unit’s officers had been focusing on investigating, identifying and arresting blue-light gang members in Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas.
Makgato said the blue-light gang allegedly stole a white Toyota Quantum from Diepkloof, Soweto.
“Members followed up on information, and they found a lead in Klipportjie.”
They recovered the Quantum and a VW Polo sedan fitted with blue police lights at a house on Englewood Road.
The suspect found at the scene was arrested, charged with possessing a stolen motor vehicle and detained at Elsburg police station.
In May, three members of a blue-light gang were arrested in Brakpan. They were found with firearms and police uniforms and are suspected of involvement in various robberies and murders.
