Police Sergeant Winner Morudu trained to be a nurse but instead became a cop because she couldn’t find an opening in her preferred career.
But now, 20 years later, her medical training kicked in in an extraordinary scene when she was called upon to deliver a baby in the boardroom of the Roedtan police station outside Modimolle, Limpopo.
A 23-year-old expectant mother went to the local clinic, only to find out that it doesn’t operate on weekends. There was no ambulance available to take her to hospital. That’s when she decided to make her way to the local police station.
Sergeant Mogoru said she got a call from a male colleague telling her to come to the station immediately because there was a pregnant woman who could give birth at any time.
“Now was the time to put my nursing and paramedics training to good use,” she said.
“I rushed home and got a blanket, scissors, razor and medical kit before going to the station.”
She took the woman into the boardroom where it was private.
“I instructed her to calm down and follow my instructions. Her water broke as I was preparing myself,” she said.
“I told her to push and soon a healthy baby girl arrived.”
She said she couldn’t wait for an ambulance and helped the mother push out the placenta.
“By the time the ambulance arrived the mother and baby were safe,” said the sergeant.
“I prayed all the time for a safe delivery. I didn’t want to be held accountable if anything went wrong.”
But everything went well. At her police station, Sergeant Morudu has been hailed as a hero.
