A Limpopo detective has gone down for corruption after he tried to bribe a traffic cop who stopped him for not wearing a seatbelt.
This was no ordinary cash bribe.
The corrupt policeman:
- Pinned a culpable homicide investigation on the traffic cop (who had nothing to do with it)
- Then asked for R10,000 to make the homicide case go away
Detective Butifana Maholobela was convicted by a Limpopo court on Friday.
Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said a thorough investigation revealed that the culpable homicide case had nothing to do with the traffic officer.
“It was proved that the officer was on duty in Tzaneen when the incident took place at Dobsonville, Gauteng,” Maluleke said.
The matter was reported to the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation team who conducted a thorough investigation that resulted in the arrest of the accused.
The matter against Maholobela was postponed to 4 June 2021 for sentencing.
Maholobela has since been dismissed by SAPS for corruption.
