The SAPS Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit arrested a constable working as a court orderly at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court for dealing in drugs and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said officers acted on a tip-off on Thursday that drugs and other goods were being delivered to the court orderly, who would then smuggle them to awaiting-trial prisoners.

“The member was placed under surveillance at the Khayelitsha Court, where he was seen receiving several parcels from members of the public, which he then placed in his private vehicle,” Pojie said.

When police searched the vehicle, they found food, tobacco, phones, 21 small parcels of dagga, cigarettes, a round of .45 calibre ammunition, and cash believed to be meant for prisoners.

The constable is set to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court.

Siyabonga Thizana, a local resident, suggested that the constable might have been forced to smuggle the items.

“Maybe he was threatened, and if he refused, his family could have been in danger,” he said.

However, Thizana added that if the constable wasn’t forced, he deserved punishment.

“If he did it willingly, then he must be punished.”
