City cracks down after illegal billboard goes up again days later

  • The City of Johannesburg removes an illegal billboard, but it is reinstalled days later without permission by advertising companies involved.
  • The City warns illegal billboards risk public safety, cost the city money and could be removed completely if rules are ignored.

The City of Johannesburg says it has had enough after an illegal billboard was put back up just days after officials removed it.

City officials say the advertising sign, linked to Centrefold Media and Naked Insurance, was taken down last week during a legal enforcement operation. The billboard was later reinstalled without permission.

The City described the move as a serious and deliberate break of municipal by laws. Officials say those involved knew the billboard was illegal when it was put back up.

They added that this is not the first time the companies have broken the rules, which makes the matter more serious.

In response, the City says it has introduced stricter enforcement measures. These include issuing penalties for repeat offences and launching investigations to identify everyone involved.

Officials also warned that the entire advertising structure could be removed if it is found to be unlawful or not compliant.

The City said illegal billboards can put people at risk, especially when they are installed without proper engineering approval.

Officials raised concerns that some illegal adverts rely on illegal electricity connections. These can be dangerous to the public and may damage city infrastructure.

Beyond safety risks, the City said illegal advertising hurts its ability to collect revenue. Companies that do not follow the rules avoid paying permit and rental fees.

This loss of income, the City said, affects service delivery for residents.

The City stressed that municipal by laws apply to everyone, no matter how big or well known the company is.

Officials said they will continue taking strong action against anyone who ignores the law.

Residents and businesses were encouraged to report illegal advertising through official City channels.
