Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu was thought to have been found injured in a destroyed building following Monday’s earthquake in Turkey.
However, his club and agent have now confirmed that the player is still missing.
Atsu, who plays for Hatayspor, was reported to have been rescued from the rubble of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake and taken to hospital with some injuries.
The club doctor has now revealed that he is not in the hospital where they were told he is being treated: “When we heard the news that he was taken to Dortyol Hospital, we especially went and looked, but he was not there,” Dr Gurbey Kahveci said.
“At the moment we accept that Savut Taner (Hatayspor sporting director) and Christian Atsu were not found, unfortunately.”
A tweeted statement by Atsu’s agent on Wednesday morning added to the scare that the former Newcastle United winger may still be in danger.
“Following yesterday’s update from the club that Christian had been pulled out alive, we are yet to confirm Christian’s whereabouts,” agent Nana Sechere wrote.
“As you can imagine, this continues to be a devastating time for his family and we are doing everything we can to locate Christian.”
“Official updates will be provided as more information comes to light. Please respect the family’s privacy during this harrowing time and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated news as this will only hamper the search efforts for Christian.”
“Thank you for all your prayers and support.”
