Chris Hani’s widow, Limpho Hani, made a shocking revelation at the commemoration for the 30th anniversary of her husband’s death.
She said that her husband’s killer, Janusz Waluś, was granted parole because she did not respond to his letter of apology, which she claims she did not receive.
One of the steps to parole being granted is the guilty party must write an apology letter to the victim’s family, which must be accepted before a meeting between the two parties takes place. Neither of those which happened before Waluś was set free.
Speaking at the commemoration at Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Heidelberg Road, Elspark on Monday, Limpho Hani expressed her disappointment with Chief Justice Raymond Zondo for granting parole to Waluś.
Waluś assassinated Chris Hani, a leader of the anti-apartheid struggle, outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on 10 April 1993, just a year before the first democratic elections.
Limpho Hani said that she had not received any letter of apology from Waluś and did not know what it was even about.
She shared her frustration with the Constitutional Court, stating that it had failed her family.
The event was an opportunity for Limpho Hani to speak about the impact of her husband’s death and the ongoing struggles faced by her family.
In a separate announcement, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi declared the formation of a new coalition between the ANC and EFF.
Lesufi used the event to pledge his commitment to restoring service delivery in the metro, which he claimed had been neglected by the previous DA-led coalition government.
He also mentioned that the construction of Ekurhuleni University had been halted for 16 months under the previous government.
