The Nigerian state Kaduna has passed a new law to punish child rapists with castration and death.
Men convicted of raping children under age 14 will have their testicles surgically removed before being executed.
The law was signed this week by Nasir El Rufai, the governor of Kaduna, pictured above. Kaduna is in the north of the country.
Those convicted of raping people over the age of 14 will also face castration under the new law, followed by life imprisonment.
The New York Times quoted Nigeria’s minister for women’s affairs last December as saying that two million women and girls were raped in the country each year. In June she said that number had doubled due to the coronavirus lockdown.
