- Kaizer Chiefs won their second trophy of the season by beating a depleted Sundowns team on penalties after a goalless Home of Legends Cup final.
- Both teams used the tournament to give game time to players who don’t usually start.
Kaizer Chiefs beat Mamelodi Sundowns in a penalty shootout to win the first-ever Home of Legends Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
After a goalless game, Chiefs won 5-4 on penalties to claim their second unofficial trophy this season, having won the Cufa Cup in October.
Sundowns played without at least 10 international players and injured stars like Themba Zwane, Thembinkosi Lorch and Tashreeq Matthews.
This gave chances to players like goalkeeper Sanele Tshabalala, Camaga Mdevulana, Erwin Saavedra, Siyanda Msani and Malibongwe Khoza.
Chiefs also used the chance to give rare game time to Brandon Petersen, Sibongoseni Mthethwa and Pule Mmodi.
Earlier, Chiefs reached the final by beating Golden Arrows 2-0 with goals from Mfundo Vilakazi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
Sundowns made it through after drawing 1-1 with Chippa United but winning 5-3 on penalties.
The final was a tight match with neither team able to score. Sundowns strikers Arthur Sales and Lucas Ribeiro Costa couldn’t break through Chiefs’ defence of Inacio Miguel and Given Msimango, while Chiefs forwards Ashley du Preez and Ranga Chivaviro also struggled to create chances.
