Chiefs put Hunt out of his misery

Menzi Magubane

Gavin Hunt finally got the axe on Friday.

Now he will probably go down as the worst coach Kaizer Chiefs has had since the inception of the Premier Soccer League in 1996.

His firing followed a 2-1 defeat to relegation strugglers Black Leopards on Wednesday. Hunt signed a 3-year-contract with Chiefs at the beginning of the current season when he moved from Bidvest Wits.

His contract was terminated with immediate effect and Arthur Zwane and Dellon Shepard will see off the remaining games for Chiefs. Amakhosi confirmed the news on their website on Friday afternoon.

Hunt’s sacking doesn’t come as a surprise. Under Hunt, Chiefs have lost 15, won 12 and drawn 17.

The only thing that the four-time Premier Soccer League coach of the season will be proud of is taking Amakhosi to the CAF Champions League semi-finals. Chiefs have never been to the group stages of the tournament before and that was a historical moment for the Soweto giants just to qualify for the group stages.

Amakhosi are likely to hire Stuart Baxter. Rumours have been making rounds in the past few weeks that Baxter has been talking to Chiefs management to take over from Hunt in the next season.

Chiefs’ defeat to Leopards puts them in danger of missing out from the top eight. They are in 11th position with two matches to go against Golden Arrows on Sunday and TS Galaxy next Saturday.
